After 76 years of breeding Poll Herefords, Ian and Diney Locke have made the decision to disperse the Wirruna herd in Spring 2026.
For Ian, a third-generation Hereford breeder, it is a bittersweet milestone for a program whose genetics have shaped herds across Australia and internationally.
“We have loved breeding Herefords and made many great friends through our involvement in the beef genetics industry,” Ian said. “But with no succession in place to carry the stud into a fourth generation, we feel the time is right to slow down, step back from bull breeding, and offer our registered herd to the industry.”
Widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading seedstock programs, Wirruna has built its reputation on highly fertile, efficient females, intensive performance recording, and sustained genetic progress. The herd ranks among the breed’s leaders for calving ease, growth, maternal strength, and elite carcase traits, and notably holds the highest marbling genetics of any Hereford herd in Australia.
The dispersal will present a rare opportunity for cattle breeders to secure proven, profit-driving Poll Hereford genetics, built on decades of disciplined selection and capable of delivering long-term value to commercial and seedstock herds alike.
